Atoms

//

Synthesis From The Other Side

Atoms is a new kind of synth plugin that utilizes cutting edge physical modeling to generate an endless variety of organic and otherworldly sounds. Use it to build naturally rich textures that the world hasn’t heard before.

Complex Physics In A Simple Package

Physical modeling simulates the behavior of real life instruments. However, Atoms takes you beyond what’s possible in the natural world. Its features are complex enough to explore the outer bounds of sound design, yet so simple that you can easily mangle, shape and create.

At its core, Atoms is powered by a simulation of interconnected masses and springs with tweakable properties and dimensions. The model is triggered by a virtual bowing action that excites the system and makes it vibrate to generate sound.

A Living Organism

Nothing in the natural world is ever truly static. Physical modeling adopts this trait by generating sounds that have the same organic fluctuations as acoustic instruments.

But Atoms takes it further. Its six main parameters can be automated with a selection of powerful motion options to add extra life. This lets you create soundscapes that are constantly re-generating, like a natural organism.

If you’re used to working with sample libraries, Atoms will bring a new level of otherworldly realism into your tracks.

Program New Patches With A Click

Atoms comes equipped with a powerful randomization engine. At its heart is a musically calibrated algorithm that selectively adjusts each parameter based on its relationship to the others, giving you usable patches with every roll of the dice.

You can narrow the algorithm further by limiting the random ranges for any knob or locking parameters from changing.

Finally, the Recycle button is a second randomizer that will create new patches similar to the current patch. Once you have a sound you like, click recycle to explore related options.

Physically Modeled Effects

The bottom panel gives you a range of creative effects to further sculpt your sound. You can also choose between four sonic profiles, each offering a different calibration of the mass spring network simulation that powers Atoms.

With the exception of Space (reverb), all effects in the bottom panel are created by altering the physical model itself, as opposed to adding a separate FX chain. This gives you a range of unique modulation effects that are an inherent part of the physical model and sound naturally pleasing.

Features

  • Chaos: Atoms’ virtual masses and springs can introduce nonlinearities as they push each other back and forth. Turning up the Chaos control increases this effect for seasick pitch glides and detuning.
  • Order: Atoms’ mass-spring networks gradually lose high frequency energy as they decay—a physical process known as damping. Increase the Order control to introduce greater damping to the springs, acting like a low-pass filter.
  • Force: A mass-spring interaction model needs a source of energy to generate sound through vibration. In Atoms, it’s a virtual bow. The Force parameter controls the pressure of the bow on the springs, adding noisiness and sharper harmonics as you increase it.
  • Overtones: Overtones controls the position of Atoms’ virtual bow along the mass-spring network. Turn it up to bow closer to the boundary, producing bright overtones like those of a violin bowed close to the bridge.
  • Drive: Harmonic clipping with a waveshaping function that can bring out the complex harmonics Atoms creates.
  • Resonant Low-Pass Filter: A traditional low-pass filter with resonance for even more tone shaping. Can be automated for LFO filter sweeps.
  • Musical Automation: Movement is the key to Atoms’ evolving, organic sound. The plugin’s intuitive automation system lets you put all six main parameters into motion. Choose from four distinct automation types (including polyphonic aftertouch, if enabled) and set their rate, range and behavior. Or sync to the host tempo for rhythmic effects. Atoms’ LFOs can run independently, or they can be triggered per voice for maximum flexibility.
  • Visualizer: Atoms’ graphical display gives you visual feedback on the behavior of the mass-spring systems under the hood. It’s a direct representation of the nodes and connections in the simulation, so what you see is exactly what you hear. Watch as you play to see the mass-spring network in action.
  • Root & Profile: Atoms can handle everything from powerful basslines to growling leads and airy pads. The root control lets you quickly set the octave range to transpose up and down. The four unique profiles give you different arrangements of Atoms’ mass-spring network for even more sonic range. From pristine detail to lo-fi goodness, each profile has its own character to discover.
  • Attack & Release: Atoms’ envelope shape comes from the physics of its mass-spring model. Its attack control varies the onset of the virtual bow from abrupt to gradual. This lets you dial in everything from gentle pads to aggressive plucks. The release control affects damping in the mass-spring network for everything from short decay to infinite sustain.
  • Movement, Modulation & Vibrato: Atoms’ mass-spring interaction model can create interesting variations on classic modulation effects. Varying the pickup position on the springs or modulating their stiffness gives rise to unique chorus and vibrato. Altering the depth and speed of the bowing action creates a subtle undulating motion. These effects are all part of the actual physical model and do not introduce any separate processing.
  • Reverb: A little context can go a long way when it comes to synth sounds. Atoms’ built-in reverb lets you add ambience with simple size and mix controls on an X/Y pad.
  • 250+ High Quality Presets: Atoms comes with hundreds of custom presets from leading producers, so you’ll never run out of inspiration. From sci-fi SFX to organic, string-like textures, browsing sounds lets you explore every side of Atoms’ personality.
  • Further Settings: Atoms comes equipped with MPE-based polyphonic aftertouch, a built-in global tuner and two color themes. Toggle between monophonic and polyphonic modes or enable the ECO option for more lightweight processing. The PANIC button stops all voices if unexpected behavior occurs.

Transit

The Ultimate Transition Designer

This plugin kills static mixes. Baby Audio teamed up with Andrew Huang to create Transit: an FX plugin that’ll give your mix transitions super powers. Use it for build-ups, drops, motion effects, risers and sweeps – and keep your listeners constantly engaged.

Creative transitions between song parts play a vital role in keeping listeners engaged and excited. To make these transitions, producers rely on multiple tracks and plugins – and a suffocating amount of automation lanes.

Transit simplifies this process down to just one plugin. It hosts 18 powerful effect-modules, freely loadable across 7 slots. All effect parameters can be linked to a global Macro Control, which you automate to create complex FX transitions with one knob movement. The result: More engaging, less static, mixes.

Features

  • The ultimate plugin for creating complex, hand-rising, and jaw-dropping FX transitions with one knob movement
  • Perfect for building excitement between song parts and adding little moments of ear candy to your productions
  • Can be controlled with a single Macro Knob or a Motion Sequencer that triggers DAW-sync’ed automations at the click of a button

BA-1

A Synth With A Soul

BA-1 is based on a portable 1980s synth with a toylike appearance and a gritty sound. Despite its small size, it left a big mark on music history, while still flying somewhat under the hype radar. The original has been used as a secret weapon for bubbly synth textures by some of Sweden’s most successful pop producers of the past two decades. It was also a staple of 1990s digital dancehall and beloved by the indietronica scene for its raw lo-fi quality. The ‘CS01’ – as the original is called – has never been properly captured in software form. So for Baby Audio’s first-ever synth, they started there.

In keeping with Baby Audio’s motto ”It’s an evolution, not an emulation”, they modelled the hardware with the greatest possible accuracy, before carefully upgrading it with new and useful features. A second analogue-modelled oscillator, FM, polyphony, and more, help to vastly expand the sonic palette of the original. All while keeping its signature sound unspoiled. Additionally, BA-1 lets you drain the battery, bend the circuits, and use the built-in speaker – for an authentic lo-fi aesthetic that you could normally only get with hardware.

Features

  • 4 Color Options – After long hours in the studio it can be nice to see something new. BA-1 lets you switch between grey, blue, purple and orange colour modes to keep things fresh.
  • 500+ High-Quality Presets – BA-1 comes with a ton of new musical inspiration in the form of 500+ carefully crafted presets.
  • FM – FM adds complexity and depth to the classic analogue subtractive architecture, giving you more sound design options
  • Envelope Section – The envelope lets you shape the sound with the same quirky side effects as in the original hardware
  • LFO Section – A simple LFO that is easy to utilize and hard to mess up – like the original.
  • Sidechain – Synths sound better when they ‘move with the mix’. That’s what the Sidechain feature is for.
  • Tone + Drive – BA-1’s FX section would be worthy of its own retro-colour plugin. It is inspired by cheap 1980s rack effects and guitar pedals.
  • Delay + Reverb + Chorus – The grainy digital delay, reverb and chorus combo is THE sound of the 1980s! Baby Audio has recreated this epic FX combo in BA-1 – modelled after budget rack hardware from the era
  • Battery – The original synth could be powered by batteries. But they never lasted long – and weird sonic artefacts were introduced as the power deteriorated. Baby Audio modelled this behaviour and exaggerated it slightly for a better effect. Drain the battery to achieve pitch fluctuations, noise and distortion the further down you go.
  • Speaker – Sometimes a mix needs some ‘moving air’ to come alive. While the original hardware’s speaker was by no means high quality, it had a quirky and pleasant lo-fi vibe. Baby Audio modelled it in all its rough glory.
  • Re-Gen – Creates new and unique patches with every click. Unlike a regular randomizer, Re-Gen hosts a smart algorithm, calibrated to come up with usable and musical presets on the fly.

Crystalline

Next Generation Algorithmic Reverb

Crystalline is a new, state-of-the-art, reverb plugin with a pristine and modern sound. It gives you unprecedented creative control to shape your reflections. You can sync reverb start and decay times to your song’s tempo.

It follows the tradition of the classic algorithmic reverbs but adds new features and higher fidelity thanks to modern computer power. It is meant to sound unreal – in the most positive sense of the word. Its rooms and halls won’t sound anything like those in your house – but closer to those of your dreams!

Features

  • Size: set the room size from tiny to large. This control is detached from the “Length” control, meaning you can get any size/length combination you want, including esoteric settings like huge spaces with very short tails or tiny spaces with very long tails.
  • Sparkle: emphasize high frequencies inside the reverb algorithm. This generates reflections that are naturally brighter, which will help you achieve that extra shine on vocals or snares.
  • Width: set the stereo image of the reverb from mono to wide – and even further to extra wide.
  • Resolution: sets the complexity of the algorithm from ‘basic’ to ‘pristine’. More complex settings will give you an ultra-clean reverb response, free of metallic artefacts – while the ‘Basic’ setting will give you an efficient CPU performance at a normal fidelity.
  • Modulation: creates pitch variations inside the reverb algorithm. This results in a richer sound that works especially well to fatten up synths, guitars and vocals.
  • Shimmer: makes the high frequencies of the reverb tail decay slower than the rest of the spectrum, giving the reflections an ‘angelic halo’ effect. You can set the frequency cutoff point as well as the multiplier effect, which controls how much longer it takes for the higher frequencies to decay
  • Damping: a dual filter control that lets you remove high and low-frequency content from the reverb reflections. This control offers a fast way to get rid of clutter and muddiness in your mixes.
  • Sides: a high-pass filter that removes stereo information from the low end of the reverb, while keeping the mono information intact. This is especially helpful for creating wide vocal or lead instrument reflections without muddying up your low end.
  • Gate: instantly recreate the classic 1980s gated reverb sound. The gate offers ‘threshold’ and ‘release’ controls and makes it fast and intuitive to make your snares go ‘Phil Collins’.

Smooth Operator

Introducing Clarity on Demand

Smooth Operator combines equalization, spectral compression, and resonance suppression into a singular creative experience that’s instant and intuitive. Use it to perfect your tonal balance and add a touch of ‘hi-fi’.

Baby Audio’s spectral detection algorithm adapts to your audio 44,100 times per second and automatically eliminates fatigued frequencies. This gives you full control to shape your signal and bring out more definition.

While most spectral tools focus on audio restoration, Baby Audio wanted Smooth Operator to be all about creative expression. The plugin is meant for shaping your tone. Use it to compress, EQ and ‘purify’ in one simple process – and know that Smooth Operator has your back when it comes to automatically eliminating artefacts.

Features

  • Brings out clarity and smoothness across instruments, vocals, and mix busses.
  • Allows for creative tone-shaping without artefacts or harsh resonances.
  • An intelligent algorithm that automatically detects and resolves fatigued frequencies
  • 63 presets created by friends of BABY Audio – including Preston Reid (Ciara, Toni Braxton, Lil Uzi Vert), David Nakaji (Post Malone, Aminé, Lil Eazzyy), Rob Kleiner (David Guetta, Sia, Britney Spears, Giorgio Moroder) and Neenah (Winne, Mr. Probz, Nana Fofie, Joe Budden)

IHNY-2

Mix Harder

The plugin is purpose-designed for slamming your tracks in parallel and will hit harder than your typical go-to compressors. It is not subtle, but a dedicated tool for adding energy and “slap” to drums, mix buses or even the master bus (if you dare!)

IHNY-2 is an evolution of Baby Audio’s very first plugin, I Heart NY. The original was a favourite with many users and was picked for the SOS Awards by Sound On Sound Magazine. V2 ships with new features, surgical control – and improvements in sound.

Features

  • Configuration – IHNY-2 splits the incoming audio into two duplicates. One remains untouched by the plugin (Dry track), the other is subjected to all the goodness IHNY-2 has to offer (Wet track).
  • Tweak Panel – HNY-2 is meant to be as fast and intuitive as its predecessor. But if you need to go deeper, the Tweak Panel gives you full control over the compressor.
  • Attack + Release – Sets how fast the compressor engages and disengages.
  • Ratio – Sets the compression intensity from mild to aggressive.
  • Punch – Heavy compression tends to suck the transients out of a signal. The Punch control works to emphasize attack transients in the compressed track, helping it cut through even at very high compression levels.
  • Harmonics – Imagine a saturator that behaves like a compressor – that’s Harmonics. This feature introduces harmonic saturation controlled by the gain-reduction, meaning more compressed parts get saturated harder.
  • Shape – Adds the custom ‘smiley EQ curve’ to bring out the lows and highs and make the compressed signal more present. (The smiley EQ curve is what sets “New York Compression” apart from regular parallel compression. IHNY-2 can do both).
  • Tilt – Makes the compressor work harder on either the low or high end of your signal – which can be useful for controlling bass-heavy material and letting the high end breathe (or vice versa).
  • Lo + Hi Preserve – Prevents the low and high frequencies from being compressed above/below the cutoff points. This is a great way to preserve the kick while squashing the rest of your drum bus.
  • Oversampling – Run the plugin in 1x, 2x or 4x oversampling modes. (1x recommended for better CPU performance).
  • Solo – Monitor the wet signal in solo. Useful for finetuning – or for using IHNY-2 as a regular insert compressor.
